What is different about cleft rhinoplasty from noncleft rhinoplasty?

So cleft rhinoplasty differs from most cosmetic rhinoplasties in that there’s much more asymmetry in the development of the cartilage and the development of the bone structure. There’s more extensive restructuring of the nose that needs to take place. There’s also all the effects of surgery that they’ve had. And so I’ve had the benefit of operating on a lot of patients who have had their cleft repair performed 10, 20, 30 years ago, and you can see sort of the echoes of those techniques and that causes certain patterns of scarring that need to be addressed. Even when we rebuild the structure you’re also limited by the skin, the muscle, the envelope of the nose. And so there’s a lot of unique, different techniques that we use for our cleft rhinoplasty patients.
