What can we do from now until the Cleft Lip Repair surgery to get the best result?
For patients who have a cleft of the lip and then also it extends into the gum line. What happens is the muscles of the lip will pull the cleft wider and wider. So if we can, we like to perform Nasalalveolar Molding, which is a sort of braces essentially in the first few months of life. We reconstruct some of the forces of the muscles of the lip to bring that palate and that gum line closer together, and then also do some shaping and molding of the nose to make the surgery more predictable when we perform it. When you have a wider cleft, you’re depending a little bit more on projecting how the child is going to grow and come back together over time.
