Here we have a lovely girl immediately before and after her unilateral cleft lip repair.

Even though we perform many surgeries each week, we always keep in mind that oftentimes this is the most important operation our patients will undergo in their lifetime.

Careful balance and repair of the skin, muscle, and mucosa is performed for the lip repair.

The nose is usually treated at the same time to help set the stage for the child’s growth until adulthood.

Ideally no further lip or nose revisions are needed. However, every patient will have scarring plus inherently asymmetric growth.

How severe that asymmetry is, and how much it is affecting patients, pushes us towards or away from further surgeries in the future.

Case Details

Cleft lip repair is traditionally done at about 3 months of age.

Some centers have moved this up to 2-4 weeks, once the child is doing well and gaining weight. There may be some benefits to feeding and weight gain doing this on the earlier side.
