Will more surgeries be needed after the Cleft Lip surgery?
For children with a cleft lip alone, sometimes they have just the single surgery and that’s it. For patients who have more involvement of the palate and extending further back into their nose, for our cleft lip and palate patients, there’s usually the cleft lip repair between three and six months, then palate repair between nine and 12 months, and then if we need to do a bone graft right along where the teeth are along the gum line, that’s a third surgery, between seven and nine years old as the permanent teeth are coming in, and then oftentimes a fourth surgery later on either to line the teeth back up or to do a definitive rhinoplasty where we can reshape the nose and help breathing.
