Why not fix the palate at the same time as the lip?

Why not fix the palate at the same time as the lip?

I normally like to repair the palate between nine and 12 months in a single stage. That seems to balance speech development, trying to repair the muscles in the palate before speech starts developing rapidly at about a year of age. At the same time, we want to wait as long as we can because the earlier you operate, we’ve found that it causes scarring and can inhibit or keep growth from developing normally. So even though some patients have less growth just inherent to the palate, the less that we can do to cause any problems, the better.
