A pannus (or panniculus) is an area of overhanging tissue.
Here, a roll of skin and fat hangs over a normal crease where skin is attached to the fascia beneath.
This overhang can cause problems like rashes and infections, pain, and difficulty with daily work and exercise.
A panniculectomy is simply the excision of this overhanging skin and fat.
This is not a full “abdominoplasty”.
A panniculectomy leaves the belly button untouched, and there is no repair of any diastasis recti (where the muscles in the middle of the six-pack have a gap in the middle, usually after having children or having significant weight gain and loss).
That said, removing this extra skin can be life-changing, improving or eliminating problems with chronic pain, odor, and infections. The confidence boost and having additional clothing options is a plus, too!
