Fibrous Dysplasia Before & After Photos

Fibrous Dysplasia Before & After Case 1

Fibrous dysplasia is a rare bone disorder where normal bone is replaced by fibro-osseus tissue.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This can be in a single bone (monostotic) or in multiple bones (polyostotic).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Rarely, FD may be associated with light brown (cafe-au-lait) skin spots and endocrine abnormalities. This is named McCune-Albright Syndrome.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
FD is not passed from parent to child. The cause is thought to be a sporadic mutation of a protein increasing bone turnover. Solid bone is replaced by softer, more fibrous bone.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Expansion of this soft bone can cause pain, asymmetries, and recurrent fractures. Pressure on surrounding nerves can cause blindness and hearing loss.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Diagnosis is by clinical exam, imaging, and tissue biopsy. Bone scans may be used to evaluate for other affected areas.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One medical treatment is pamidronate, a medication used for osteoporosis and other bone disorders.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Surgical treatment depends on symptoms, extent of disease, and location. Rapid expansion is concerning for malignant transformation or cystic degeneration.
